Different types of batteries

Laptops are powered by a variety of different battery kinds. These batteries power your laptop through direct current.

Lithium-ion: This is the battery type you desire for your laptop. This kind is more compact and efficient than other kinds of batteries. Unlike nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride batteries, lithium-ion batteries lack the feared "memory effect." The memory effect is a feature of nickel-cadmium batteries that causes them to lose their capacity for full recharging if they are repeatedly depleted to the same level and then refilled without overcharging before being completely emptied. Lithium-ion batteries often provide a rapid-charging option, which is advantageous if you're in a hurry. Finally, this battery type is more eco-friendly than the others.

The nickel-cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are two older kinds of batteries that were previously used in portable computers (NiMH). The NiCad is seldom considered for laptops these days because to the unfavourable effects of The Dreaded Memory Effect. While a NiMH battery lasts longer than a NiCad cell, it also suffers from the dreaded Memory Effect.

By inspecting the label on your laptop, you may determine the sort of battery it contains. Refer to the following section.

There are still a few laptop computers that use NiMH batteries. This is acceptable, however you may want to check to see if you can update to a Li-ion battery.

To extend the life of a NiMH battery, I suggest completely draining it on a regular basis. For instance, after using, draining, and recharging the NiMH battery around four times (or so), completely drain it and then recharge it. This should extend the battery's life somewhat.

Two more batteries may be installed in your laptop. The laptop's internal clock is powered by a secondary alkaline battery. A third battery, optional, powers the system during the minute or so it takes to replace a depleted main battery with a new one. See the following portion of this chapter, "I adore that extra battery."

Using unauthorised batteries in your laptop might result in disastrous consequences, such as the laptop catching fire and exploding. If you have any doubts, just search YouTube for exploding laptop.
